Glitter, Frosting, and Balloons

Happy Birthday to me.
That's right, today is my Birthday.
30 + 1

So I've managed to survive my first year in my thirties and I honestly say it's as great as everyone said.  You are suddenly more exempt from comparison and from caring as much about how other people view you.  I've never been so comfortable in my own skin.  It's so freeing.
At our girls night out last month my sweet friend Anna and I discovered that her Birthday is the day after mine.  Which is really fun because our other friend Caycee's is the day before so we've got the 6th, 7th, & 8th represented so it's no wonder we all hit it off so well.
And then Anna dropped a bomb.

"Only I think I'm a good ten years younger than you."

***silence***

And the thing is, Anna is like 11.  Or twenty five.  Or something like that.
But she's clearly not ten years my junior.
She's a blogger and a mom of two.  Her youngest child happens to be older than my first.  I consider her a peer.  But age wise, she's not.  It had never crossed my mind.

I guess I've been as clueless about aging as the Real Housewives.
And it got me thinking about how I appear to others.
I'm married, I'm a mom, I'm responsible, I'm clearly not in college or fresh in my first job.
So does that make me old?
Do y'all think of me as old?
What is old?  Surely it's a state of mind and not a number.
So clearly I'm not old.
Just old enough not to care that awesome twenty-somethings think I'm old :)
So I plan to put on my skinny jeans and some leopard flats and celebrate being myself today!

  2. Happy Birthdsy Love! And don't feel old I am one year older than you! But I do know how you feel. You know what drives me crazy?? When people call me "MAM". I am clearly not old enough to be a mam. However I still picture myself as like 18 which is probably half the problem. Here is to our 30's being the best decade ever- those girls in their 20's are missing out! Love you and can't wait to see you!

  8. Happy happy birthday, friend! Your rock 31! It is funny after marrying a man 13 years older than me, age really has become just a number. No one believes me when I tell them my hubby is 40. So, keep on doing your thing!

  22. Julia, amount turned 39 a couple of weeks ago and I started to feel old at 35. Just sayin' :).
That being said, it is true you will feel even more comfortable in your own skin with each passing year. I wouldn't go back to my 20s for anything, for real. But 40 does freak me out, I'm not going to lie. Happy Birthday!

  23. ...oops, freaking iPad auto correct..."I just turned 39". I can't help myself but to set it straight...but you young gals make fun of us old ladies for doing that :)

  24. Happy birthday! Age is just a number...it's how you feel that counts.

My 30's were great and my 40's even better!
I think it's all in your head...how you feel and your outlook on life. Heck, I had my 4th child at 41. My oldest was 18 and the youngest was 12 but I though I can do it again. I did and it has been great! I am so blessed!

You seem ageless to me....if that makes sense. When i read your blog I don't have you tied to a number. You seem hip, stylish, with it and a mother, responsible, settled. You are a beautiful woman!

Enjoy your birthday, enjoy being 31!

    Happy birthday!

  25. Happy birthday to you. I just celebrated my 30th a few weeks ago and I certainly agree that it's just a state of mind. I have been in the real world since graduating college in '04 and I too am a mom - but I neither feel young nor old. I feel just right...right where I'm supposed to be. And I hope you do too!

  26. Happy birthday!!! No you're not old. What is old? I'm 29 but I never remember when asked-it always takes a second. And I'm welcoming 30. 30s seem like a great place to be. Anyways...hope your birthday was as fabulous as you are!

  28. That is what I love about being in my 30's (I'll be 32 next month), is being comfortable in my own skin - finally. I don't look better than I did in my 20's and I'm certainly not thinner, I just feel more confident. Ok, not all days ;) It's almost a freeing feeling when you get that 30th birthday out of the way. Anywho, you look freaking fabulous and Happy Birthday to you!

  29. Happy (belated) Birthday! I did not feel old until I turned 36, and my friend informed I was now closer to 50 than I was to 20. Ouch.
