Dark Sofa Slipcover

So I'm thinking about slip-covering my pink sofa in a grey or brown-grey-beige color.
I know you've never seen pictures of her and that's because she's the playroom couch and it's really hard to decorate around.  I'm just not into the super preppy look like I was at 22 when I bought her.  She was my first real furniture purchase with my first paycheck post college.  Of all the floor models at GDC, I came home with pink and white stripes.  Oh how my 31 year old self hates that fateful decision.
I'm over the pink and in need of a sophisticated neutral.  For various reasons, this couch is probably going to replace my curved sofa for position as top dog.  Y'all know my love/hate relationship with that other sofa.  It's just too big to fit into most rooms and that might be a problem for us in the near future.
So back to it, thoughts on a darker slipcover?
Will I have the same versatility with accessories as I would with a white sofa?
Yes, I knew you were going to ask, so here she is in our kitchen sitting area in Pawleys Island right after we moved in.  As you can see, it's in great condition and it's amazingly comfortable so I don't want to scrap it altogether.
And in our family room in Richmond still looking as bright and pink as ever.

  1. I love my gray sofa. It seems to handle any color combo I throw at it.I say go for it.

  2. Grey is a wonderful neutral that could work with a ton of accent colors. And grey would be more child-friendly than white. Go for it!

    1. These are similar and I'm sure she could do a special order with white fabric and add the pompom trim. I've purchased from her before and the quality is amazing!

I also have a local source that has great prices but I haven't used her yet. Let me know if you want her information.

  4. I love gray!!! We have it as our "neutral" in the den and everything works with it, even brown leather! I think the richer the gray the better!

  5. I love that you bought a pink stripped couch, such a 22 year old thing to do. You should have seen some of the furniture I bought. It was bad. I love, love, love a dark couch especially with kids its a no brainer. Gray is my fav color right now too.

  7. Those are all gorgeous options! I like the charcoal as well... With 3 year old and 1 year old little girls, I tried hard not to do white, but I desperately wanted it... I slip covered my couches in a white denim/twill fabric and haven't looked back! I was terrified they would get ruined... By the best part about that fabric and color? I can get ANYTHING out of it! I can bleach them in hot water, stain stick them and throw them in before a party and they're great! The gray is amazing but don't be afraid to go with white (as long as its a slipcover!) :) they've kept me happy! As a former Richmond girl, now Raleigh, I'd LOVE to show you the pink and green stripe I had under my NOW WHITE love seat... Immediate post-college decision, as well. The Sweet Briar grad in me def came out! Good luck choosing!

  8. I'm so diggin a dark gray for the slipcover. It's definitely a neutral you could easily work around, and you won't flip your top as much every time the kids get something on it. I like our light colored slipcover, but I hate looking at every scuff and smudge. I'm too lazy to toss it in to wash every time something gets on it - too much work. When it comes time for a new couch I'm going gray.

  11. My next sofa will be grey:))) I think it is cozy & chic all in one. Really hope Mary McDonald doesn't read your blog, seeing how I misspelled her name yesterday... My bad! There have been a bunch of hints dropped about relocating ? Back to Charleston I hope;)

  12. Just my 2 cents from experience, I had a charcoal gray velvet sofa which looked fabulous! Fabulous until we started living with it! It seemed to attract every little light colored piece of lint or whatever that floated through the room! It drove me crazy and after a year I ended up practically giving it away, I just couldn't stand it. Now, the type of fabric you choose could make all the difference, just don't make the mistake I did! :) Good luck!

  13. Grey would be a great choice. A total neutral, just a darker neutral. Would look totally fab with all the gold, black and light blues etc you have.

  15. I have a white slipcovered sofa in our family room. Although I love the look, I'm seriously considering having another one made in a darker color(maybe with contrast piping). So yes, go for it!

  16. I love the grey, especially the charcoal shades! We are changing our formal living room into a playroom and I have been considering a slipcover for the sofa in there. You have inspired me to go grey! I am overwhelmed by the idea of finding a slipcover that looks nice AND fits well. I would love for you to do a post on slipcover options!

  17. Totally forgot her name was Isabella. She, as we all were, was amazing when we were 22. Love the gray. Turns out its the new pink, sadly, 32 is not the new 22...FYI

  18. I love the gray idea...very sophisticated! For some reason I'm picturing a gray velvet...gorgeous, maybe?

  19. I believe a white sofa would still give you that versatility. But if you prefer a beige or grey sofa, go for it! Do not hesitate to mix and match. If you keep all your furniture with the same tone, it would look boring. It could be the center table, the single sofa, or the throw pillows that would make your entire sofa look better.
