Currently Obsessed: Office Fashion

My sister recently went back to work after having her second baby and it got me thinking about work.  And how many of y'all come read this from your iphone just after you go through your work email.  I feel like it's an area I neglect.  So immediately I started thinking about what I would wear if I went back to work.  And then I started thinking about the whole thing; not just fashion but the whole going to work topic.  I guess I never talk about it because I don't.  I haven't officially worked in several years and I feel a bit out of the loop.  I've been really fortunate to stay home with my babies but to be honest I've been tinkering around the idea of going back to work one day.  In an office.  The whole idea kind of terrifies me.  Okay, the whole idea definitely terrifies me.  Other days I think what a crazy notion that would be.  I love being home with my kids.  At least for now I can think about the fun parts of working.  What do you wear to work?  Are certain things like open toe shoes off limits?  Talk to me?

  3. I had my baby last July and went back to work part-time for a year. This year I am going back full time. Is it bad to say I am excited? I like getting away from the house and having an excuse to buy more clothes. The extra money doesn't hurt either- we just bought a new house too!

  4. It definitely depends on the office. But honestly I was always the youngest in the office so leopard flats were okay as were pink pants. HA! In general, open toe were a no-no. Love the silk dress.

  5. I definitely need both of those dresses for work. I'm always looking for things I can wear out and also to work!

  6. I am an attorney who has worked both at a large firm and in the government. Unless I am in court or meeting with a very conservative client, open toe shoes are fine. I like to mix it up and if I am wearing something more classic and understated, then I mix it up with bright or printed shoes and fun accessories. I do alot of JCrew like outfits and Elizabeth McKay dresses. Lots of brights and prints mixed with classics. I must confess that one of my favorite parts of work is putting together a fun outfit in the morning.
Going back to work with kids is hard. I have a 4 yr old girl and 2.5 year old boy. The competing schedules of myself, my husband, and kids make working a constant juggling act. I envy you being able to be able to stay at home and focus on the important things.

  7. I always have a problem finding what to wear for work. Dresses are usually my best bet! Even in an office though during the summer, I get freezing cold with the AC. I love that first blue dress. It would look amazing with the nude pumps, or even nude flats!!

  9. I loved "work" clothes when I did IT work for a Lilly store. Right now I never want to work anywhere but home. Give it a couple hours and people will be in my way or chatty while I am trying to do paperwork and I will long for a studio somewhere else.
    Also, I neeeed those earrings!

  10. Open toe in our office is fine - but anything BETWEEN your toes (any type of flip flop - even a heeled, dressy version) is forbidden. Dressy summer sandals - either heeled or flat are okay. I'm a meeting planner, so when we travel we are required to wear closed toe and closed heel onsite.

Attire is pushing the more casual side of "business casual", both for men and women, but we're a small office in a suburb of Washington, DC, and a nonprofit, so I think the environment has a lot to do with what people wear. As casual as the staff tries to push it, our (female, 60-something) boss wears St. Johns knits EVERYDAY.

  13. It's so funny because I feel like this is a case of it's always greener on the other side. I work outside the house and envy SAHMs who can wear casual clothes at the house or running errands and don't have to iron, dry clean, and put together an outfit. It was fun to shop for work clothes before I had my daughter but now I wear whatever doesn't have to be ironed! :) I can see how after a while I would miss it though.

My law firm is pretty laid back on the dress code as far as law firms are concerned. I don't litigate so I'm never in court and can't remember the last time I wore a suit. I usually wear dresses with closed toed heels and a cardigan if it's sleeveless. Sleeveless isn't against the rules but I feel more professional with a cardigan or blazer. My biggest struggle is finding dresses that are an appropriate length. I'm on the taller side and have to pass on so many cute dresses because they are well above my knee.

  16. I wish I dressed this cute to work! My last 2 jobs have had very lax dress codes so I've been lucky to get away with a very business casual wardrobe. Someday I dream of dressing up my work wardrobe more but it's pretty expensive to have cute work clothes.

  17. The dress is so pretty and a great basic piece. Love the clutch! Club Monaco has some great picks! I need to check out their website. They are off my radar so I forget about them. First time stopping by your blog:) looking forward to following!

  18. I love these choices. They are all so cute! I know what you mean about being afraid to go back. So many of my girlfriends have had this "work anxiety" conversation. I would never change being able to be home with my kids but it does knock your career confidence around a bit.

  19. Great post! I am a government attorney in DC (from the comments it looks like so many attorneys read your blog - we all need a creative outlet!) I wear "dressier business casual" - lots of dresses, skirts, and heels - but since we have 0 contact with the outside world, pretty much anything goes, and I am definitely more dressed up than most of my colleagues.

I have a lot of SAHM friends who are thinking about going back to work. It can be rewarding, but in my experience, it's a real juggling act. I've been both a SAHM (for about 4 years) and a working mom - my girls are now 7 and almost 10 - and let me tell ya, I think it just gets harder to juggle it all, not easier, as they get older! School projects, endless activities and playdates, etc. - it's a lot to juggle on top of a 40 hour per week job. I enjoy the intellectual stimulation my current job gives me, but having been done both, I definitely think being a working mom is harder - you have all the responsibilities of a SAHM (laundry, groceries, managing activities and playdates, keeping your house from falling apart, school projects, homework) plus a 40 hour a week job! But I think it can also be a great boon to your kids by the extra opportunities you can provide your children with your salary (like college savings!) - which is the reason I do it.

I love your new house, BTW. Great bones. Congrats!!
