Backyard Ice Cream Party Planning

June 5, 2015

Wells is turning FIVE at the end of next month and we've already started talking about what kind of party she wants to have.  I love keeping her in the loop and letting it be about her and what she likes but I did have to veto her first choice: a Monster High Vampire party.  My husband and I are on the fence with whether she's even allowed to watch that show yet.  I feel like it's a bit too old and several of her friends are too young to watch it.   We'll probably save that for grade school if she's still into vampires :)

She's also begged for a blow-up water-slide/bounce-house.  There was time I would have rolled my eyes at that monstrosity in my backyard but there are just so easy and such a hit.  I worry about the safety of them but all of my lawyer friends get them so I guess they can't be that bad, right?!

I plan to let that be the main attraction.  I'm expanding on that to include a bit of an ice-cream party with Palm Beach flair.  Ideally we'd get to keep the water-slide contraption all day and we could double up on the friends party and the family party.  Her little friends come from 10-12 and then an early evening cookout with our big extended family.

Wells and I have been wanting Matthew to build a lemonade stand for a while now and I think this will be the perfect excuse.  Wells and her little friends build little markets and stands all the time in our front yards.  I'm imagining a thousand ways we could use it for parties and play in the future.  We'll have some treats set out on it for the party but it could be a concession stand or even an outdoor bar for grown-up functions.  I absolutely love the striped look, especially the pink and white but I may go with a more neutral color.

We'll keep the food simple, ice-cream and fruit.  Maybe some popcorn for good measure.  I love the idea of making cupcakes in ice-cream cones.  I haven't done that before but there a million pins so I'm guessing it can't be that hard.   Have you tried that?  I'll probably do a cheese tray for the grown-ups because that's always a hit.

I'll fill you more in on the specifics as the planning continues!

  1. The pink and white lemonade stand would be adorable! For the kids, always go color over neutral :)

    1. I was thinking more gender neutral so maybe green and white stripes :)

    1. yes! I actually could see it being super cute! The vampires she's into comes from the show Monster High and many of her friends aren't allowed to watch it yet (too old) so I felt like maybe we just should let that theme go for another year :)

  3. That's going to be an adorable party! I completely get you on the bounce house, but I too caved and one will be delivered to our backyard in a matter of hours for a Kindergarten graduation party. It keeps them all out of the house and right now that's all I care about ;D

  4. Such a cute idea! You mention Palm Beach (FL) but the picture shows Palm Springs (CA)....We winter in Palm Beach and everything is so very Lilly and happy...We have visited Palm Springs and it is very golf oriented. Your party concept sounds more like Palm Beach and I am looking forward to seeing photos. Have a great weekend!

    1. Yes! I was just using a loose interpretation. We're really just going to order a water slide and put our pink flamingos in the backyard and call it a day. Most of our friends have been using paperless post for invites so we'll probably stick with that anyway :)

  5. I've been reading you for awhile, and really like your blog, but the tone of this blog has kind of thrown me. This is a party for a 5 year old, I'm surprised you would roll your eyes at a bounce house or a vampire theme. It should be all about her, right?! The theme of this party seems very "you"...I hope its what she likes. I don't mean to snark, but kids only get to be kids for such a short amount of time!

    1. No worries, I think maybe the tone just didn't come across right. It was meant to be funny. I just meant that pre-kids me would have scoffed at the idea but I've learned to let the kids parties just be fun for the kids :) We're absolutely planning on getting her a big waterslide/bounce house! They're amazing! The danger of getting hurt gets me a little nervous but I don't know what I'd do with a group of energetic small children on a hot day at my house without one. Now that would really have me giving the side eye :)
