ONE ROOM CHALLENGE

July 18, 2012

Okay, so I'll admit, I don't have much to share today.
It's not that I don't know what I want to do with this room.  Just see exhibit A below.
I'll be honest, it's 20% laziness with 80% fear.  Or maybe the other way around, but whatever.
The results, or lack there of are the same.
You see, I definitely have a few details I want to wrap up in here but my biggest challenge is the bookshelves.  I want them to kick ass.  I want them to stop being lame and random and eating up prime corner real estate.  And I want to paint them black.  Like the pretties below.

See how unlame this picture is above compared to my little corner below.
I also hung two pieces of art above the computer but am going to have to find something else.  They're just too small.  And I'm not interested in starting a gallery wall on this side too.
Here are some close-ups of the bookshelves.

INSPIRATION
Yes, I'll go ahead and show you what other people had the balls to do in hopes that you will judge me for wussing out and email me until I grab a paint brush.

Please be sure to visit the other ladies to see what they've been up to in the challenge!

  4. ok - so if you have a little fear - what about painting the INSIDES black and style it up real good so you can see how great the black background looks? OR, what about a nice black bookshelf with a coral inside??

either way - you'll make it great!

  6. OMG, do it, do it, do it!!! It's going to look freaking amazing and really stand out against all the white! You could even get your toes wet by just painting the backs black at first and see how you feel??

  7. I love the black. One thing that would add awesome impact is building them up to the ceiling it would add so much drama. Glidden's new door and trim paint in high gloss is AMAZING and perfect for projects like this!

  18. Hi Julia,

That is going to look gorgeous! I literally JUST featured a friend's office makeover where she took her white shelves and painted them HIGH GLOSS BLACK - you can check it out on my blog here:

  19. You can do it girl! It would look AH MAZ! And you've got all the books and accessories, that's the hard part. I would just take it section by section and it'll come together. You've got the skills girl, you can do it!!

  20. Wow, I would be too wussy to paint the shelves black too...UNTIL I just looked at those pictures. Those are amazing and I must admit, I am loving that idea. I love the pictures that have the black shelves while keeping everything else in the room nice and bright.

  21. I had my dad build bookshelves for hubs' home office and we stained them minwax high gloss ebony. I have never looked back because they look awesome! Go for it!

  22. This makes me feel so much better. I am always afraid (ball-less) with this kind of thing. It is good to know that someone with exquisite taste, such as yourself, struggles too. It would be great, and it's only paint as "they" say. Who the heck is "they" anyway. I am still loving that table you grandfather built. It is on my pinterest under DIY!

  23. Your room looks amazing as is! I am with the others - grab a brush Or roller and paint away! Good luck with that, I too sit there and am gripped with indecisiveness and fear. Painting my sideboard red was two years of thinking about it. I finally did for this challenge and am glad I did!

  24. Oh my gosh, GET THAT PAINT BRUSH! You're going to love the bookshelves black and they will really POP in that room! I guarantee you won't regret it!

  25. I think your room is looking good and your ideas are great!!! Those bookshelves will look killer painted a high gloss black!!! Easier said than done, right? I have a list a mile long with "to dos" at my house! And that area on the wall above the wooden desk may look good with a gigantic cork board or 4 together and you could pin the kiddos art work or fabric swatches, etc up there? Just a thought!

  26. Like what others have said before me, perhaps you can paint the inside of the shelves black to see how you feel about it? Or perhaps you can paint it in a dark gray? Whatever you decide, I am sure it will look fabulous!

Excited to see your progress next week!

    Have a good day!

  27. YES to black! It makes books look sexy, adds drama, looks bold, confident and classy. How often do you get that with a can of paint and a brush?

I also like company. I'm painting my dining room/library black. I tell the people involved: think old-fashioned scrapbooks with black paper. It's not going to be solid black...but it is going to be high gloss lacquer! (SHUSHHHHHH!)

  28. Yes! Grab a paint brush. You will not regret it!!

  29. Grab that paint brush, color code those books, and GO-TO-TOWN, girl! It's going to look awesome. Just go for it, it's just paint!

  30. Hi Julia, I wanted to go dark with mine, too. I decided against it for two reasons. 1) the bookcases don't go up to the ceiling and I thought it could look squatty and 2) these's no way in my room to add the weight on the opposite wall that the dark color would create. I'll live vicariously through you on this one. You've got crazy skills and I can't wait to see what you do!

  31. Ahhh, do it!! For sure, paint them black!! that look is so insanely gorgeous, and it would look perfect with your zebra chairs! I like where your head's at... :) You've got a great plan; you can do it!

  32. I will agree with everyone and said go for it. I like the idea of starting with the backs, but I think you should go big and go all black.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Clear off those shelves and do it. It will force you to re-organize the book shelves!!! I am all talk....but if I was your neighbor I would come help! If you have wine of course.

  34. Take a deep breath and go for it! I love me some black in decor, and the shelves will look fab. Also, I love the art you hung above your computer but I agree with you about the scale. Hopefully you can find another perfect spot for them!

  35. I love black book shelves. So striking and adds a bit of "drama" to a room. Go for it Julia! I think they'll look fabulous.

  36. Love the bookcases that are black on the inside and white on the outside!

    Go foe it!

  39. GO FOR THE BLACK!!! Not sure of the cost, but some decorative cabinet molding, painted black as well, along the top would be fab!! Spray paint the ducks in BRIGHTS and use them to help style the shelves! Good luck, we can't wait to see the finished product!

  40. I adore the black shelves! But I have to say, they only look great when they are at floor to ceiling in height. Perhaps you could add a bulkhead to the top of yours so they reach the ceiling visually? I feel like spacewise, a wall of books is much more appealing than a wall with bookcase of books. But that's just me...

  41. You have so much to work with. I completely agree about the black shelves. They will pop with the white trim and light color of the wall, not to mention the chairs. Maybe color-code the books, add some gold/brass accents, and hang the pictures on the bookshelves to give the appearance they are floating? Pink, black, gold, and white is an awesome color combo!

  42. I love the admission '80% fear'. That is why the upstairs of my house is so empty, and why so many walls of my house lack art and decor! It's all fear. Plus, I am out of interior design budget for the year!

What an amazing collection of bookshelf images. Before we moved, I collected literally dozens and dozens of books, thinking that I would be set with the library in our new house. I was wrong. With 6 shelves in the room, the library swallowed up those books and was begging for more! I like the idea of facing good quality coffee table books forward, as some of the examples show. I also like mixing art in with the books.

Loving this one room challenge series!
