Holiday Outifts | How to look good when it's cold outside

November 19, 2014

I get a lot of emails this time of year asking if it's too late to sneak in a last minute Christmas Card picture session.  Mostly people are worried that it's just too dang cold.  My answer is that it's absolutely not too late and if you embrace the weather you will get lovely results.

The camera doesn't care that it's crazy cold outside and if you plan accordingly you can get a really pretty family picture!  Just plan your outfit accordingly and you will love the results!  Wear your fun patterned scarf and prettiest wool coat.  Put on something sparkly and some bright lipstick and embrace that pretty winter skin like J.Crew does!  A little sneak of this shimmer brick will really help any time of year but especially when you are more pale.  I seriously never leave home without it.  Grab a hot chocolate afterwards or maybe even bring some with you!  I absolutely love dressing for colder weather as long as I don't have to be out in it for too long!

  1. Hi Julia! I love this look! So classic! Question, have you ever purchased coats from Factory? I love the one you featured but am sometimes on the fence with their quality!

    1. okay, see below! And PS- the Old Navy vest is purely for looks. Which is a good thing for me because I love the layered look but don't always need the extra warmth here in Va. But don't count on it as another stay warm layer :)

  2. Kelly,
The factory uses cheaper materials and a few less details but often improves upon the cut of items that were favorites at jcrew. So if you are after a luxurious coat, this may not be for you but if you want a slimmer cut (all my factory pieces are slimmer cut than jcrew) and a fair price this may be just what you are looking for.

    1. That's a great answer! When I want to be really super warm I wear Patagonia. Hands down. There is no other fleece or down that keeps me as warm. But for more transitional days or pieces more for style I've always been really pleased. Overall I generally think my factory pieces hold up just as well as regular j.crew. My cream dress coat is from regular J.Crew and I love it but I would absolutely consider adding a second wool coat from factory

  3. Great finds! It reminds me of my favorite Norwegian quote "there is no bad weather, just bad clothes"! It is snowing like mad here in MI so I could definitely use some good winter gear! :)
